Two Tasty Chocolate Cafes in Melbourne
Posted August 18th, 2008 by amandakChocaholics need to know where to go when they need a fix, and there are a couple of must-visit spots for chocolate lovers in Melbourne:
Chocolateria San Churro is actually a franchise with cafes in several states of Australia, but a great spot is the one in the QV Building on the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale Streets in downtown Melbourne. Great hot chocolate and excellent churros, and you can get a share plate with a big variety of biscuits and cakes.
Cake and Coffee at Brunetti in Melbourne
Posted August 18th, 2008 by amandakThe Brunetti chain of cafes in Melbourne are famous for delicious cake that comes not only with a huge variety but also a very reasonable price. There are now three branches of Brunetti but locals agree that the one in Carlton (194-204 Faraday Street) is the best one.
Breakfast on the Sunset Coast, Perth
Posted August 18th, 2008 by amandakIn the northern suburbs of Perth, West Coast Drive winds its way along the coast and there are numerous small cafes along the way to try. Personally, I think breakfast is the best time to be here, although seeing the sun set over the ocean in the evening is pretty nice too! Here are three great places to try:
- The Wild Fig Cafe at 33 West Coast Drive has fantastic breakfasts and friendly staff, and a lot of covered outdoor seating for good weather - so you can eat while smelling the salty smell of the ocean.
Two Great Independent Bookshops in Perth
Posted July 7th, 2008 by amandakIf you are a book lover looking for a good place to browse in Perth, along with a chance to pick up local literature that's hard to buy elsewhere, then there are two great bookshops to recommend.
- Oxford Street Books is located in, logically, Oxford Street in Leederville, a very short walk from the Leederville Train Station. Although it's relatively small, it's a magnet for lovers of independent bookstores and is in a great location for grabbing lunch or a coffee after your shopping trip.
Anzac Day at Kings Park
Posted July 7th, 2008 by amandakEvery year on April 25, Australians celebrate Anzac Day, the day chosen to remember all Australians and New Zealanders who have fought for these countries in wars. In Perth, the largest ceremony to be held on Anzac Day is the Dawn Service, held in Kings Park around six o'clock in the morning.
The Long History of the Swan Bells
Posted July 7th, 2008 by amandakVisitors to Perth these days see the Bell Tower on the city side of the Swan River foreshore and simply see an interesting tourist attraction. In fact, the Bell Tower is one of the newest additions to the Perth tourist trail, and has an interesting background.
Best Fish'n'Chips at Cicerello's
Posted July 4th, 2008 by amandakEating fish and chips near the water while visiting Perth is pretty much a compulsory meal - both the climate and the huge amount of seafood around make it perfect. And the ideal place for your fish and chips meal is at Cicerello's in Fremantle, the port of Perth.
Drink and Dance at The Deen
Posted July 4th, 2008 by amandakFor several decades, a good pub for a night out in Perth has been on Aberdeen Street in Northbridge, the nightlife area of Perth just over the railway line from the city center. The pub used to be called The Aberdeen but in recent years has shortened that to The Deen. While strictly speaking it's "just" a pub, it has a couple of dance floor areas with DJs and a semi-outdoor spot for live music too, so there's more to do than just drink.
Fancy Eating at the Oyster Bar
Posted July 1st, 2008 by amandakOne of the prettiest places to eat in Perth is along the southern side of the Swan River, directly opposite the city center. There are quite an array of restaurants and cafes along this strip, some pricey and others more reasonable, but one of the most famous is the Oyster Bar, just behind the ferry terminal on the South Perth Esplanade.
European Hotel a Nice Fit in Perth
Posted June 24th, 2008 by amandakPerth people all know you can buy good cakes from Miss Maud's, the chain of coffee shop/restaurants that are found in most shopping centers, and older Perthites remember Miss Maud herself advertising the food on TV. Fewer people realize there is also the Miss Maud Swedish Hotel in Murray Street, downtown Perth.
