Australians love to barbecue - or "have a barbie", as they say - and the local councils in Perth help make that possible for everyone by providing free barbecue facilities in parks around the city. The gas barbecues are usually well-maintained, reasonably clean and found in some of the most picturesque spots in the city. You just need a quick supermarket stop for meat, bread and drinks and away you go.

Three great spots for barbecuing in Perth are:

1. Kings Park. This is the ultimate city-center park, and barbecues are located near the main war memorials that overlook the Swan River and the central business district.
2. Hyde Park. A short walk out away from nightlife-center Northbridge, Hyde Park is an old park with shady trees and a lake. There are several barbecues located at different corners of the park.
3. Victoria Garden. You can take the free CAT bus to Victoria Garden on the south-east side of the city. In a recently redeveloped area, the barbecue area is quite new and the park is spectacular - along with views across the water.
