Anzac Day at Kings Park
Every year on April 25, Australians celebrate Anzac Day, the day chosen to remember all Australians and New Zealanders who have fought for these countries in wars. In Perth, the largest ceremony to be held on Anzac Day is the Dawn Service, held in Kings Park around six o'clock in the morning.
Many thousands of locals and visitors make the pilgrimage to Kings Park for this early morning event, during which several speeches are made, commemorative wreaths are laid at the main war memorials, and a silence is held to remember fallen soldiers. In recent years there have been large television screens added to the ceremony so that everyone has a view of the event.
As dawn breaks, you can start to see the magnificent view from Kings Park down over the Swan River and to the city center of Perth. Towards the end of the ceremony, military planes perform a fly-by which really cuts into the silence. The solemn ceremony gives visitors a different insight into the people of Perth and makes that early morning start more than worth worthwhile.
