Every January 26, Australians get a public holiday and are free to show some patriotic spirit to celebrate the founding of the nation. Australia Day is a day full of barbecues, visits to the beach with family, and it all culminates in the evening fireworks shows.
For many years, a big proportion of the people of Perth headed to the Swan River foreshore and the edges of Kings Park to watch the fireworks festival held over the river. This is still a big part of the Australia Day evening, but as the population of the city has grown, smaller offshoot fireworks celebrations have started in other parts of the city, like Fremantle. If you're in Perth on Australia Day, check the newspaper to find out which fireworks will be going off where.
